Straight Lines & Broken Timelines

A linear narrative is a storytelling structure in which events are presented in chronological order. The story progresses from beginning to middle to end without major disruptions to the timeline. Cause and effect follow a logical sequence, and the audience experiences the events as they happen.

In contrast, a non-linear narrative presents events out of chronological order. This structure may include flashbacks, flashforwards, parallel timelines, or fragmented sequences. Non-linear storytelling often requires the audience to actively piece together the timeline, as the narrative may shift between past and present.

Disney films predominantly use a linear narrative structure, where events unfold in chronological order. Although they may incorporate reflective or emotional memory moments, the overall storyline progresses sequentially. For example, in Mufasa: The Lion King (2024), the narrative follows Mufasa’s journey from his early life to his rise as king in a chronological sequence. A relatable scene occurs when young Mufasa struggles to prove himself and understand his place in the Pride Lands. This moment clearly builds from earlier events and directly influences his later growth and leadership. The cause-and-effect progression reinforces the linear structure, as each stage of his development logically leads to the next.

In contrast, some modern blockbuster films — particularly within the Marvel Studios franchise — experiment with non-linear storytelling when time manipulation or fragmented timelines are introduced. This technique reshapes the audience’s perception of events and can create prolonged suspense, as viewers must actively interpret how different timelines connect.

Ultimately, both narrative forms are effective, but they create different viewing experiences: linear narratives emphasise clarity and character development, while non-linear narratives prioritise complexity, suspense, and active audience engagement. The choice of narrative structure significantly influences how meaning is constructed and how the story resonates with its audience.
